Plaza del Coso

Peñafiel’s Plaza del Coso was declared a Heritage of Cultural Interest in 1999. This Medieval square was created to accommodate bullfighting festivities and is still sometimes used for that purpose nowadays.

The square is surrounded by 48 two- and three-floor private homes constructed in adobe, stone and wood, composing a rectangular space with two access points, one to the North and another to the West. The buildings that surround Plaza del Coso boast wooden balconies that are heavily decorated with motifs including leaves, flowers and fruits. During the Festivities of Nuestra Señora and San Roque, the balconies become boxes from which owners with viewing rights can watch bullfighting festivities.

Albeit created to accommodate bullfight events, the square is used as a setting for other events throughout the year. One of these events is the Descent of the Angel, which is staged on Easter Sunday and has been declared a festivity of Regional Tourist Interest.
Plaza del Coso is one of Peñafiel’s prime tourist attractions, but even more so between August 14 and 18, during the celebration of the Festivities of Nuestra Señora and San Roque, which have also been declared festivities of Regional Tourist Interest. During the festivities, a bullring is installed in the square and bulls are released in the Peñafiel style: one bull stays in the ring whilst the other is released outside the ring. This characteristic has granted Peñafiel’s festivities international fame.

Plaza del Coso is also unique in that it is still governed by ancient customary laws and implements the traditional ‘viewing rights’ custom. Consequently, the balcony owners are entitled to contemplate bullfighting events in Plaza del Coso from the balconies, regardless of whether or not they own the actual house.
Visitors who want to grasp what actually goes on in Plaza del Coso during the Festivities of San Roque and the Descent of the Angel should call in at Cosovisión, a tourist centre accommodated in one of the houses in the square that screens a fun, lively videos of these two important events.
